Nairobi’s Cheza Dimba Champions Light the Path for Grassroots Football
The cheers rang loud across Dandora Stadium on Saturday as Mseto FC from Dagoretti and Achievers FC from Ongata Rongai emerged as the men’s and women’s champions of the second edition of the Nairobi SportPesa Cheza Dimba tournament.
In a closely fought final, Mseto FC edged Victors Faith Church 1–0 thanks to Charles Baraza’s 16th-minute strike that sealed the regional title. Meanwhile, Achievers FC overcame hosts UEFA Despanol Queens FC 5–4 on penalties after a thrilling 2–2 draw in regulation time.
The triumph marked a major milestone for both teams, who not only walked away with cash rewards ;KES 250,000 and KES 50,000 respectively : but also secured mentorship opportunities under SportPesa’s Tujiamini Initiative, a long-term program aimed at nurturing emerging talent and promoting community resilience through sport.
“Last year we were knocked out early, but this time we came prepared and used new tactics to win,” said Mseto FC Head Coach Michael Branabe.
“We plan to invest the prize money back into the team. SportPesa’s support has given these players real belief.”
The event also featured Bronze Kwa Ground giveaways, celebrating unsung heroes : from local entrepreneurs to artists ; who are driving positive change in their communities.
“Cheza Dimba is more than football; it’s a celebration of talent and hope,” noted Debbie Maina, SportPesa’s Public Relations Executive.
“Today, Dandora showed the true spirit of Kenyan football, and we’re excited to take this momentum to the Nyanza edition in Kisii.”
From Grassroots Glory to Premier League Firepower
As grassroots champions lift their trophies, attention now turns to the big stage — the 2025/26 SportPesa Premier League, where record champions Gor Mahia face KCB this afternoon at Dandora Stadium in a much-anticipated 3:00 PM kickoff.
KCB, sitting third on the table with six points, will be banking on home advantage and strong form to topple the league giants. Midfielder Tyron Kariuki says the squad is fired up and ready for the challenge.
“We’ve trained hard all week, and the mood is positive. Gor are a big team, but we’re ready to make a statement,” Kariuki told club media.
On the other side, Gor Mahia’s Ghanaian striker Ebenezer Adukwaw, who scored a brace in the last match, is expected to lead the attack once again under the guidance of coach Charles Akonnor.
Midfielder Enock Morrison emphasized the team’s focus on finishing a key improvement from their earlier games.
“We’ve worked on composure in front of goal and finishing our chances. We know KCB’s style, and we’re ready,” Morrison said.
This match could prove decisive for both teams : a win for KCB could see them climb to the top of the standings, while Gor Mahia aim to continue their march toward yet another title.
